Description

RAKER PEAK

This is the obvious Western facing rock band located on the west facing aspect of Raker Peak. The rock here has a quality range that spans a range from granite hard to kitty litter. Special care should be taken when climbing new territory here as there is a fair amount of unsecured rock teetering on the brink, especially near the top. That being said, there is a lot of variety here from easy face routes and cracks, to full on overhanging micro crimping ninja routes and thought provoking sphincter tightening trad routes. And for the cerebral impaired adventurous types, there is a fairly vast amount of uncharted territory that still remains in amongst the nooks and crannies of this nearly mile long wall.  Remember, even though some of the rock seems bulletproof, "don't take it for Granite"!

Getting There

Located in Lassen Volcanic National Park. The cliff band is approximately 1/4 mile hike east of highway 89. If traveling from Redding and using the Northwest entrance, follow hwy 89 approximately 8 miles and locate a turnout on the eastside (Left) of the roadway. There are approximately three pullouts along the road one could use. However, the best one is the first one you'll come across which is at the far North end of the formation. Walk up the shallow gully staying on its left side and locate a trail heading South up the slope which will zig zag up a series of long switchbacks to the base of the Finger Rake Area. This trail is fairly new and may be difficult to follow, look for the many cairns that mark the path and keep a keen eye out for when the trail turns and switches back up the opposite way.

If coming from the Southwest Entrance, travel along highway 89 approximately 19 miles. Once past the Devastation Area parking lot, look for a small pullout at 20 miles and park here. Make your way east up the left side of the gully and locate the switchback trail to the base of the Finger Rake Area.
