Fat and Happy area

Rhode Island > Arcadia Managem… > Mt Tom

Description

A new area has been found and recently (2015) has seen some development. It is about 5 minutes hike west of the main trail and consists of a small ledge about 20' tall at its highest and a long boulder with a good traverse and a new RI test piece, Krav Maga V12, up an overhanging prow. The ledge has a bunch of easier cracks and potential for possibly a few more harder lines.

This quiet, out of the way spot faces west, so gets afternoon sun, seems to dry quickly and has good quality rock with generally flat landings.

For now this can include the various scattered problems between the Trailside Wall and Fat and Happy.

Getting There

It is about a 12 min hike from rt 165, 6 minutes off trail. Hike the white blaze Mt Tom Trail south from 165 ~ 5-6 minutes until you pass along the top of the Trailside Wall (Pineline etc.) . Just after the southern end of that ledge, leave the trail to the right (west) and head a couple hundred feet towards a large clump of rock (the Blair Bldr.)Pass around its left side and continue past another broken ledge with some very marginal little caves and then a ledge about 25' tall (not much real bouldering there) Don't get drawn down the valley on your left (though there is a little potential down there, but hook around right after the 25' wall and the ledge will regrow. Once you see the 14' tall prow you will know you are there.

The ledge you pass just before getting to this area proper. Looks better in the picture than reality, though it's fun pulling the highball/solo roof bulge on the right.

[Hide Comment] Ha, just noticed an extra link was making half the directions not show. It should be corrected now. The area is directly on the other side of the main trail from the Egg. Head west instead of east off trail. Jun 8, 2015
[Hide Comment] ok yeah i thought that was where you were talking about. if you cross the path directly where egg is there is a ton of boulders back there. the first one you come to has a very nice line up the middle maybe v5ish. you should have seen it... i will post pics.. and more behind that with 2 projects i have not done yet. i will add to the area you created for completeness on that page. never saw that prow though...looks cool Jun 8, 2015

[Hide Comment] I did see some chalk on the way in and was wondering what they were. There is definitely more worthy looking stuff between the trail and the Fat and Happy area.

Organizationally, if we include this whole area under the "Fat and Happy Area" moniker, since it is scattered, we will need to have really good individual directions for each problem. This would work ok until we start getting more routes. Or, if you have a name for this general region, we could go right ahead and make an area by that name and I can move the F&H sub area into it. Then we can make more sub areas for other route clusters. Jun 9, 2015
