Section 18

Michigan > Upper Peninsula > Iron Mountain

Description

Calling all developers!  This area is proving to be a geological hot bed for climbing potential.  Look at the drone shot's, there's a lot of rock to see, and more you can't!  Crags and routes have begun to be developed, but this area still needs to be truly established, ie. parking and trails.  Access issues are still in development.

Currently Section 18 consists of 5 main cliffs running in a broken ridgeline from the northwest to southeast. For the most part all of the rock faces south west. It's mostly steep quartzite and each area features very different climbing.

Area 1. Cliff Seabert
Area 2. Unnamed
Area 3. Unnamed
Area 4. Picnic Area
Area 5. Dry-tool Rock

Getting There

Section 18 is currently underdevelopment and access across private property is being negotiated. If you are interested in helping develop please contact one of the local U.P. climbers for more information.

[Hide Comment] If someone wanted to look into the bouldering potential around here who would I want to get into contact with? Jul 8, 2016

[Hide Comment] Ben, there isn't very much for freestanding boulders, but there is a lot of short cliffs that you could put up tons of problems on. Apr 8, 2017

[Hide Comment] Area is open to public..ATT there is no signage or marked trails, so we are asking that climbers be mindful of private land owners not to ruin this for future use. This would mean climbers need to aware of public borders and access and or contact local climbers for beta.Benton Lake Rd,Norway,MI is the road we use to enter state land, we park under the power lines east of the climbs.
I see a need and will work on a map soon. SuperiorIceClimbingAdventures.com Apr 10, 2017

[Hide Comment] I was wondering who we would contact if we want to try and get to some top rope climbs in Section 18? Our family goes to Eagle River often and is looking for a place to climb within a couple of hours. Any help would be great! Thanks! Jul 19, 2017

[Hide Comment] A lovely area in the Copper Country State Forest. There are lots of loose blocks sitting on ledges - wear a helmet and do not belay directly below your climber. (Don't leave gear laying below a climber either.) Oct 28, 2019

[Hide Comment] Yueyang Meng - this part of UP is quite bad for ticks. WI insisted upon importing the Packers, cheese curds, and ticks. Aug 14, 2020
