Grapefruit Rocks

Alaska > Fairbanks & Vicinity

Description

Same limestone band that forms the climbs in this region. The limestone here is polished and requires technical movement on thin edges coupled with creative footwork. This remarkable area rests within a vast expanse of rolling hills and domes blanketed with Boreal forest consisting of Paper Birch and Aspen groves that create a landscape of colorful patterns that blend and contrast with the region's Black and White spruce species. The radical swings of temperature gradient and sunlight at this high latitude makes this subarctic area a singular climbing experience in the Interior.

Getting There

Travel North from Fairbanks on the Elliot Highway. You will pass Wickersham Dome trailhead at Milemarker 28 and at about Milemarker 38 you will pass Globe Creek with the crags visible on the low rising dome on the right side of the highway. More specific directions are within the text for East and West Grapefruit Rocks.
