WM: The Dump

Missouri

Description

DUMP

n

1. Site for depositing garbage.
"Hey Jim, lets go violate mother nature and throw trash off this cliff and into the Blue River, I've used it as a dump for years"

2. M
other Nature's deposit of radical limestone bouldering in Kansas City.
"Yo Bro, are you down for another gnarly bouldering session at The Dump"

Getting There

Heading south on Holmes rd. take a left on 139th. After 1/3 mile park in the small pull out with gate on the left side of the road, but please do not block gate. Walk east on a faint trail to a walk down, take a right for Ol'Penny, walk left though a corridor for Dawn Mist. Jeremy Collins and others climbed here and established many problems, I am trying only to post what I think my contributions to the area. There are so many great problems in this zone, please help by cleaning up trash.

[Hide Comment] This zone has significantly better rock quality than a lot of the stuff in the blue river watershed. Chuck has put a lot of time into cleaning this area, especially the top outs which often have beautiful golden bullet limestone. Jan 20, 2020

[Hide Comment] The landings could use some work. Otherwise solid rock and nice climbing. May 1, 2020
[Hide Comment] tl;dr: don’t be stupid like me and forget to take valuables from your car.

enter april 26, 2022. i was setting up in the crag and someone shattered my window and stole several things from my vehicle. i have no idea whether this is a one off event or repeat for the area; i just want others to be aware of what happened.

i don’t want to scare people off from checking this crag out. there’s the obvious problems with glass and other trash scattered around that keep it true to it’s name, but the rock is truly great, with way less ticks roamin' around compared to other zones at swope.

just be smart, careful, and recognize that there’s shitty people everywhere. Apr 28, 2022
[Hide Comment] Tl;dr please help maintain rock from graffiti.

I've gone to the dump quite a few times, the last of which I discovered that the rock had been plastered with graffiti. This was obviously pretty upsetting, the left project in the cave has a hold glassed over by the paint, it's not unclimbable but certainly less enjoyable, and its a sore sight in general.

I plan to go out soon with environmentally friendly paint remover and buckets of water to clean as much as i can. I realize this may be futile and it might be painted over again but if anyone has seen the graffiti they can confirm it is not a work of passion but hate.

I'm asking anyone who has paint remover or who feels so inclined to clean whatever you can. I don't have enough for all of the graffiti so anyones help is appreciated and of course take precautions not to wash chemicals into the environment.

Graffiti was discovered 10/15/22

Thanks to anyone who helps. Oct 18, 2022
