Turkey Dome

Arizona > Northern Arizona > Sedona Area > Village of Oak Creek

Turkey Dome is a large, pointed butte headlining the broad Turkey Creek drainage. On its northwest side stands the sheer tower known as Avery's Drumstick. This dome/tower pair is one of the most prominent landmarks in the Little Park area of southwest Sedona.

Approach: about 30 minutes. Park at Turkey Creek Trailhead (high-clearance AWD vehicle recommended but not necessary). Hike up the main trail about 0.2 miles to a major junction where the official cairned Turkey Creek Trail goes right and an unofficial (but equally well developed) un-cairned trail branches off left. Take the left trail and follow it for 0.6 miles. As you enter a low area with many little washes, look for a side trail that branches off right and ascends the low ridge for 0.3 miles, depositing you on the east side of the massif. The dome should be directly above you, and the tower should be on your right.

As in the description cut left off the trail in the wash where ben is standing. Head up that wash till you hit a climbers trail to your right. Hike that trail to the base.

[Hide Comment] I took the dogs out for a hike and to scope out the approach to Turkey Dome. The Dome is quite obvious and if you botch it (like I did) you can probably head x-country without too much extra effort. Most importantly, be sure you start at the correct trailhead - see map. I took Verde Valley School Road (which turns into Red Rock Crossing) and pulled into the first staging area I found. It looked like the right spot I ended up hiking another 3/4 or 1 mile. Once you past the first staging area, continue up the dirt road until you get to the correct staging area. Then follow the beta posted by Derek to get to the Dome. Apr 27, 2020
