Access Issue: RAIN, WET ROCK and RAPTOR CLOSURES: The sandstone around Moab is fragile and is very easily damaged when it is wet. Also please ask and be aware of Raptor Closures in areas such as CAT WALL and RESERVOIR WALL in Indian Creek Details

Description

This butte and its neighboring butte, The Hand of Puttima, sit just west of the loop road about 1 mile beyond (south of) the twin towers of Putterman on the Throne and Putterman in a Bathtub. Indeed, the Putterman presence is strong in this zone of the VOG!

The Putterman Residence is perhaps the least inviting of the lot in terms of structure. It's northern profile as seen from the loop road is rather unimpressive. However, the south face is sheer, and the butte becomes a more attractive proposition when viewed from this side.

The Putterman Residence was first scaled by Cameron Burns and Benny Bach on March 6, 1999. The original route on the formation is somewhat convoluted, but basically sought the easiest terrain to the top. They started with a crack on the far right (west) end of the north face which required some clean aid (C1) to surmount. There is a two bolt anchor with tat above this crack. They then hiked way left (east) on the large ledge and scrambled up slots and slabs to the bench beneath the four separate summits. The four summits are each named, from left (east) to right (west) they are: Point Ethan, Point Iris, Point Walden, and Point Talia. Each independent summit was reached with some mid-5th class climbing, and all but Talia have double summit anchors with tat.

Eschewing the wandering FA route, we recently uncovered some high quality free climbing (for the VOG at least) on the east and south aspects of the butte. These new lines provide a bit more entertaining options to reach this neglected summit.

Getting There

Take the Valley Loop Road for about 9 miles from Highway 163. The Putterman Residence is about 1 mile past (south of) the twin buttes of Putterman on the Throne and Putterman in a Bathtub. There are a couple of small pullouts for parking as the road nears the Residence. Hike west from the road and up an obvious talus slope on the right (west) side of the north face to the base and contour back east to reach the east face. This takes about 20-30 minutes from the car.
