Description Suggest change

Columbia State Park is a hidden bouldering mecca in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Hydraulic gold mining in the 1850's unveiled an extensive amount of marble and limestone rock in the town of Columbia. The gold was depleted in the 1860's, and the town somehow survived until 1945, when it was designated a State Historic Park.

The area was first developed by the hardmen of the 70's and 80's, and has been further developed in recent years by a handful of locals. The most recent guidebook, by Dean Flemming and Daniel Forbes, can be purchased in downtown Sonora at the Sierra Nevada Adventure Company (SNAC). They also carry a decent amount of gear. The guidebook is highly recommended, as navigating the area can be extremely difficult.

The easiest accessed areas are the Picnic, Diggins, Stage Coach, and Horse Trail Boulders, but for a true adventure, try to make time to explore the Labyrinth.

Be cautious of poison oak, rattlesnakes, hobos and mountain lions. In that order....
