Description

The Bosconero and Mezzodi groups are at the far east end of the Dolomites range, just beyond Belluno as you are entering the mountains. This group of mountains lies just east of the Moiazza and Civeta groups and just north of the Schiara group. The area is less busy than the more popular mountains closer to Cortina and Canazei making a good choice for climbing if you wish to escape the crowds during a busy summer week.

Getting There

The major formation in the Bosconero sector is the peak Rochetta Alta on which the 19 pitch 5.10 “Spigolo Strobel” exists. To access the Bosconero area, drive north from Belluno on the main road leading to Cortina (the S51 which is the extension of the freeway as you are driving north out of the plains into the mountains). Approximately 6 kilometers north of Belluno is a junction at the village of Longarone. Turn north east here on the small road leading to Forno di Zoldo (road P251). A few kilometers prior to Forno di Zoldo is a lake (Logo di Pontesei) where you should park in the car park. Hike in the path heading east into the Val Bosconero towards the Rifugio Casera di Bosconero (90 minute walk) to access the majority of the routes in the area.
To access the even less traveled Mezzodi group (with the famous Gianeselli route on Spiz di Mezzo) drive as described above but continue on to the village of Forno di Zoldo. At the west end of town turn south on a tiny road heading into theValle Pramper and drive as far as allowed until arriving at a barrier (bring a good map). A 2 hour hike South east from the parking area (trail 522) leads to a bivouac hut – Bivacco Carnielli – and access to the climbing area.
