Rockefeller State Park

New York

Glacial Erratic

Approximately 30 miles from the hustle and bustle of New York City, the Preserve is an idyllic spot for strolling, jogging, horseback riding, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing.

One attraction at the Rockefeller State Park Preserve in North Tarrytown is a giant jagged chunk of rock at least 600 million years old. This mass of free-standing gneiss, almost 20 feet high and 65 feet in circumference, is probably the largest ''glacial erratic'' to be found anywhere in the county.

Getting There

The site of the giant boulder is less than a 10-minute walk from the preserve's main-entrance parking area off eastbound Route 117, down a lovely woodland path named ''Nature's Way.''

Glacial Erratic - One of the sides of the giant boulder with potential V6+ problem. Not really sure though since I'm new to climbing. Picture does not show top of boulder which is about 20 feet from floor.

[Hide Comment] "probably largest in the country." ....... Probably not ?

There's also an outcropping on eastern end of property near a parkway.......I've always imagined "raven rock" mentioned in passing by Irving in "sleepy hollow" was located in the area...... May 27, 2018

[Hide Comment] It says county ^. I went by raven rock today and it had at least 5 bolted lines, some without hangers. Anyone know the history? Mar 21, 2020
[Hide Comment] Visited here a frew times and have been all over the park. There are 2 major rock formations: Glacial Erratic and Ravens Rock(s):
1) Glacial Erratic - easiest to get to since its right next to the parking lot. It would not be responsible to climb the front face without safety equipment, but the back face I would consider a V2 if you start on the log and V3 if you start from the ground (but I am not too experienced with grading)
2) Raven's Rock - it is a much further hike but definitely worth it. shear walls with a nice little river at the bottom, a couple of boulders that will be covered in poison ivy by the summer time. As Owen pointed out there are definitely bolted lines but i only saw 1 with hangers in. I do not know the history of it but I am definitely intrigued. Looks like its Rockefeller's best kept secret but definitely would like to know more.. Apr 28, 2020

[Hide Comment] I've done some top-roping on Raven's Rock a couple of times (using natural anchors - the bolts looked very old). There's one route that is to the right of the tree that's maybe a 5.7/5.8, and we had trouble finding another route that seemed doable. The approach takes about 40 min. It's a fun mini excursion for locals though!

Oh - and watch out for the Turkey Vultures! We had to drop the rope further to the right than planned, as there was a nest in one of the crevices and the parent vulture was hissing at me. May 28, 2023
