Description Suggest change

Paint Mountain is quite possibly the most beautiful place to climb in the Territory. Directly behind you while you climb is the front range of the St Elias Mountains. Also known as Tsí Dhǟl (pronounced See-Dall) in Southern Tutchone, meaning Red Ochre mountain for the mineral found on the mountain that were used for dyes by the local First Nations people.

This is the epicentre of Yukon trad multipitch, Yukon's "Chossy Chief" if you will, but also has many good single pitch crags. Due to it's southern exposure and low elevation it likely has the longest climbing season of anywhere in the territory. Due to the nature of the rock, there are many splitter gems, but they are not as close in proximity as an area like Golden Canyon. While the grain on the slabs is great, the fractured nature creates a lot of choss, thus much of the development takes a mixed approach to protection and most routes require extensive cleaning.

Approaches to the various crags can be tricky. Many now have .gpx tracks which can either be viewed in the MountainProject app or downloaded to your favourite navigation app.

Getting There Suggest change

Head to Haines Junction from Whitehorse. 5km before arriving in Haines Junction, right after passing the Pine Lake Campground, turn right onto Pine Lake Road. Go along this road to the very end, which is a little cul-de-sac sort of thing with little trailer homes. Park here somewhere, but please don't block anyone's driveway.
