Description
Molladalen is the most well-known climbing crag in the Sunnmøre alps. Molladalen (the Molla"valley") is a mountain valley surrounded by a steep and scarred alpine ridge, with a high density of climbing routes that tops out on the various peaks and pinnacles.
There is a camp site by Storevatnet, but this is basically nothing more than a place to put up your tent, so bring all you need. A bivy cave (Reiulf Steen) can be found above the north side of Storevatnet which has a guide/beta on new routes.
The weather changes rapidly in the mountains, and the west coast is notorious for its bad weather. Snow can fall here almost any month of the year, and fog is frequent and very thick. This is backcountry, so be prepared!
A guidebook for Sunnmøre, which includes Molladalen and other areas surround Ålesund, can be purchased from Buldrehalen (bouldering gym) in Moa. Without an intro/guidance from a local climber, the guidebook is essential for finding routes and approaches for the climbs.
There is also a Facebook group for Molladalen (Klatring i Molladalen).
Getting There
From Melbøsætra there is 2h walking to Molladalen. Parts of this track is through exposed terrain, so good hiking skills and equipment is needed.
