DescriptionThe Swett Hills is one of the best, and most developed areas in Cedar City. It is a short drive from town, and easily accessible. The areas that I'm adding here are all bouldering, but the Swett Hills is technically home to Pocket Rocks, Sprocket Rocks, the Iron Mine, and the Cone. There is a ton more potential, and many areas that have been explored, but never recorded. Between the Swett Hills, and the hills south of Hwy 56 (the Haven) there is a lifetime of Welded Tuff bouldering.
There has been discussion over the years about the actual name of this area. It has gone by the Sweat Hills, Sweet HIlls, and Swett Hills. According to the USGS topo, it is the Swett Hills, so we are going with that.
Rock Type: Welded Tuff
Rock Quality: The rock is an acquired taste. It takes some time to get your skin used to it. This is why the Wash has gotten a bad rap over the years as a destination. If you only have a day here, and your skin isn't ready, you likely won't last very long. Regardless, the rock quality is great. Good friction, and solid.
Getting ThereFor The Wash: From the Exit 59 overpass on 200 North / Highway 56, drive west about 11.26 miles. Turn right on to the dirt road. (Just before getting to the road, there will be a yellow, right turn sign, start slowing down here. If you get to the Your Public Lands BLM sign, youve gone too far). Reset your odometer, and drive down the dirt road for .67 miles. Powerlines cross the road here, turn left, and follow the powerlines to the end of the road. You can park here, or turn right (north) onto a road that meanders through the trees. The trailhead for The Wash starts at the end of this road.
