Irente View Lodge Cliffs

International > Africa > Tanzania > W Usambara Moun… > Irente

Description

Irente View Lodge is located on a peninsula of the escarpment, surrounded on three sides by cliffs. While there is a lot of rock here, most of it is quite vegetated and would take a lot of work to clean up.

As of October 2022, the Irente View Lodge was charging $60US/person/day for a room and three meals. It should also be noted that as of October 2022, the village administration was charging $15US/per climber per day, plus requiring that you hire a local walking guide to accompany you at $10US/person per day (so a total of $25US/person/day).

Getting There

As mentioned in the introduction, Irente View Lodge sits on a peninsula of rock. The main view point is out beyond the lodge and as of October 2022, requires a fee of 2000Tsh to walk the short distance from the hotel to the view point. This fee is for non-climbers; see the intro for the climbing fee structure.

There are two very steep trails that run down into the valley on both sides of the peninsula:

To reach Tree Birth and the west side of the peninsula, walk about 50 yards downhill from the lodge to the center of the village. On your right will be the uphill end of the communal soccer field in the center of Irente. Turn left directly across from the soccer pitch and go down between two houses. The path (which has a wooden fence on the right side at the start) drops very steeply downhill. As you descend, you'll be able to see vegetated cliffs on your left and the much higher Kambe Peak on your right. Several hundred vertical feet down the trail, you will see a relatively clean section of wall across a small agricultural area. Traverse left across the small agricultural field, then go up a vegetated ramp to get near the base of the climb. This ramp is about a quarter of the way up from the bottom of the cliffs.

To reach the inland (east) side of the peninsula (below Darkness at the Edge of Town), walk about 50 yards downhill from the lodge to the center of the village. On your right will be the uphill end of the communal soccer field in the center of Irente. Turn right and walk along the right edge of the soccer pitch. After the field, weave between houses to reach the far side of the valley that separates the peninsula from the main edge of the escarpment. In a grove of eucalyptus trees, you will find the top of the trail that drops steeply down to the farmland below. As you descend, the main cliff of the peninsula (and Irente View Lodge) will be on your right.

It's possible to start down either of the trails described and then bushwhack along the base of the escarpment to connect to the other trail (as an example, descend the trail past Tree Birth and connect to the trail coming up below Darkness at the Edge of Town). This will likely take you 2-3 hours.
