Description

This is the northernmost buttress on the east side of the valley. The rock is good and the buttress is about 1000 feet high. To descend from the summit, head north to the gully just north of the formation and pick your way down the gully.

Getting There

Follow the trail from Little Sandy Lake north to the first lake. Here, leave the trail and follow the drainage leading to the base of the buttress.

This is a wide, steep, impressive wall. About 10 years ago I climbed the two routes listed in the Kelsey guide. They were both really good, and the guidebook descriptions were sufficient to get us up the routes. Symbiosis (the prominent corner on the far right side of the photo above) in particular was excellent, sustained and as good as anything I've done in the Winds, although I haven't done Black Elk. It was dirty, as I think it's rarely climbed, and the wall seems to be wet for much of the summer. Still, this wall is a hidden gem, well worth a visit. Aug 23, 2014
