Access Issue: The summit has a fire lookout tower/residence. Details

During fire season this tower is attended 24 hrs a day by live-in fire spotter. Visitors are welcome on the summit rock but the lookout building is a private residence. They may sleep odd hours so do not disturb them. Drilling?? Do not disturb!! They are gone sometimes, but check.

Description

Black Mountain is the first separate mountain rise from the NE ridge off of Laramie Peak. The NE side of the north face of the summit nub which is also a fire lookout tower/residence has some interesting steep face climbs with horizontal cracks at lungable reaches. The stairway to the rock summit provides easy access to the top of the summit rock. These crack broken faces are readily suitable for top roping. From the parking lot walk 30 feet to the rock.

Getting There

The shortest way from I-25 is to take the El Rancho Exit 94 about 17 miles north of Wheatland. From there follow Rd 114 west for some 7 miles and take a right on Harris Park Rd 210 to it's junction with the Cottonwood Park Rd 71 FS633. Go right for 0.7 mile and find FS 667 to the left west and take it passing through a residential zone.

Part way up this road is a unattended cable zip line across a canyon on the right. I think it may be property of the Boy Scout Camp. It looks slightly downhill. Could one slowdown/stop before hitting the support tower on the other end???
