Description
The low altitude Seminoe Mountains are about 32 air miles NE of Rawlins, WY. A large exposed granite batholith has been cut through by the North Platte River and is called Seminoe Canyon. Two dams occupy the canyon and most of the canyon bottom is filled water all the time. So you have to drive either to the west side [preferred] or east side.
The east side rock is granite near Seminoe Canyon and turns to a sedimentary rock fault escarpment when moving SE from the dam along the north side of Seminoe Lake.
The east side rock is granite near Seminoe Canyon and turns to a sedimentary rock fault escarpment when moving SE from the dam along the north side of Seminoe Lake.
Getting There
Directins for West side: Drive east of Rawlins on I-80 a few miles to Sinclair taking exit 219 and on the west side of town find Seminoe Rd 351 to Seminoe State Park. Going on this paved road north will get you to near Seminoe Dam where the pavement ends.
For the east side: To get to the east granite outcrops find 2- track roads east of Kortes Dam Camp, WY [see Map 1]going onto the mountains. Generally there is a road to each and every power transmission pole when on the tops, while there may or may not be for power towers on steep canyon walls.
The Seminoe Canyon walls downstream from Kotes Power Plant are loose metamorphic rock and can be hazardous for climbing.
For traveling along the south side of the escarpment take the gravel Hanna Leo road 291 north and west from Hanna, WY off 30/287 east of Rawins, WY. You will turn off this road going west on BLM 3159. You cannot drive across the dam top without a key to the gate.
