Description

The Boswell Creek Sherman Granite Dome is visible to the west from the Big Laramie River Valley south of Woods Landing, WY. The dome is classic Sherman Granite and offers crack systems much like those of the Vedauwoo Climbing area in the South Laramie Range. The face of the rock is somewhat featureless and seldom offers face climbing opportunities. But cracks, yes. See the pics.

The rock type here is the Sherman Granite of the Medicine Bow Mtns. and it exists South of the Nash Fork/Mullen Creek shear zone where northward are the much older Archean rocks of the Snowy Range. The Sherman granite of the south Laramie Range resurfaces westward from it burial in the Laramie Basin and offers an outcrops of some 10 Sq. miles which is all south of highway 230.

Getting There

Proceed SW out of Laramie [see MAP 1] for on highway 230 to Woods Landing and turn left onto state highway 10 going south until next to the Colorado State line. Find a ranch house in WY on your right and drive into their yard slowly[5mph]. This is the location of Rd 526 [see MAP 2] and oddly as it may seem going thru a ranch/home yard. Drive west on this road for 6 1/4 miles and park near a pullout on the right. From here hike NNE along a broad ridge less than 1 mi to where you are overlooking Boswell Creek drainage and the dome. Proceed a little more east of north to the creek/gulch which is often jammed with timber and difficult to cross due to the trees. The hike as shown in MAP 3 is easier than going straight to the dome.
