Ding Dang Dome

Utah > S Central Utah > San Rafael Swell > San Rafael Swell - South

Description

Nestled behind the reef front, Ding Dang Dome is a tower that offers some “exciting” marginal climbing. Although the approach might be long, the climbing is adventurous and the views are outstanding. Unlike neighboring Bell and Wild Horse canyons, one might have the opportunity to enjoy these canyons and tower in solitude.

“Hard core” rock climbers probably will not enjoy what Ding Dang Dome has to offer but peak and choss tower baggers will not want to miss out. Enjoy this tower during fall, winter and spring months.

Around the base of the tower are some unclimbed off-width cracks which actually look good.

Getting There

From Utah 24 south of Hanksville, turn west onto Temple Mountain Road and drive 5.2 miles.
At a junction, turn left onto Golblin Valley Road and drive 6.1 miles. Before entering Goblin Valley State Park, turn right onto Wild Horse Road and drive an additional 6.6 miles to the Ding and Dang Canyon parking area. The road is an improved, dirt, 2WD road to the trailhead.

Leaving the parking area, hike up the Ding Dang Canyon trail for 1.1 miles. Take the right branch up Ding Canyon for an additional 1.6 miles. Ding Dang Dome is the obvious tower at the end of the canyon. Enjoy Dang Canyon for the descent hike.

[Hide Comment] Climbed this formation a few months ago. I couldn't find the descent so ended up slinging a sketchy boulder near the top of the traverse pitch. If you decide to do this rap, make sure that you have 2 ropes. If not you will be down-climbing the crux of the first pitch. If there is another way to rap down, I couldn't find it (other than the 1st rap from the top). Jul 17, 2018
