Description
Raven Rock is going to be a hard single pitch sport wall near the Valdez Airport. The crag can be see a few hundred feet up the above the east end of the Runway and is the bottom left crag in a cluster of four cliffs. It is just right of Airport Heights(6 fully developed routes). It offers spectacular views of the valley, ocean and surrounding mountains but that is about it for the moment. This is a work in progress and will not be complete till fall of 2014 at the earliest. A motivated climber can head that way and build a bomber anchor off any of the many alders at the top of the wall and do some top roping. I hope to be adding routes to this area soon.
Getting There
Drive past the Valdez Airport and turn left into Valdez Glacier Campground. Follow the main road threw the campground to where it dead ends at the runway and park if driving a car. From here follow the Old Jeep Trail (dirt Road) 1/4 mile till the first walking path cuts right and heads straight to the first large cliff. Follow the trail a few hundred feet up a steep approach to the wall on right. This same trail is used to access Airport Heights on right. Trail may be slippery when wet and long pants are nice if it has not seen a lot of traffic to keep the trail packed down. Bears do a better job than people at this job so some bear spray is nice to keep around. Approach time is about 15 min.
P.S. Climbers have been on the good side of the camp hosts for many years and we want to keep it that way. DRIVE SLOWLY IN THE CAMPGROUND and DO NOT PARK IN CAMPSITES. Saying hi and offering a beer every now and then can't hurt good relations :)
