Access Issue: This area is located above a neighborhood and the bluffs are on private land. Details

Introduction

This is an older climbing area with more traditional protection. Many of the bolts are very rusty thanks to old age and a wet climate. The rock is very good gneiss. There are over fifty routes, a handful are up to three pitches long.

Getting There

From Castlegar, drive a few kilometers south on Highway 22. Turn right on 37th street and drive through the residential subdivision. Parking seems best in a small pull-out on the left side of the Bluffs. A somewhat overgrown trail starts in a talus field near the parking spot. The steep traditional classic, Sunshine Crack (5.8), is one of the closest routes to the car.

Description

This area was purchased by the non-profit group TAWKROC (The Association of West Kootenay Rock Climbers) in 2016. The 18-acre property boasts 100-metre-high cliffs but is surrounded on 3 sides by suburbia. Therefore it's imperative climbers be respectful of our neighbours so the city doesn't revoke access.
