This gigantic cliff is simply stunning standing at the base. It's easy to see how this 300ft tall cliff is the largest in the state... AND THE MOST DANGEROUS. This area was created from extensive quarrying operations. As a result the base is covered in shrapnel from massive blocks disloging and exploding at the base. It is NOT recommended that anyone belay at the base of any of these cliffs. Even lowering down can cause problems with the rope dislodging flakes and blocks that could injure, cut ropes, and kill.

Getting There

From Merritt Parkway take exit 59 and travel north on Whalley Ave (rt 69). Take a right onto Bradley Rd, at T intersection turn left continuing on Bradley Rd. Follow to end and park. Scramble up talus field up and left towards the base of the quarry. There is also the main entrance on Wintergreen Ave which will allow you to drive north on Baldwin Ave to reach the top of the quarry.

Hi Morgan. Yes, I've been living (and climbing) here in the White Mountains for 35 years. Raised our family here. I don't get on good 'ol traprock very often (hard to justify the drive with Cathedral ledge et al in my back yard). Many happy memories from Ragged in the 70s though. Look me up if you are ever up in the north woods! May 10, 2016

Probably Martin T. from parks and rec and some of his friends. Trad climbing the right side looks like a freakin' suicide mission IMHO. The only side that remotely looked safe was the left side of the wall. Mar 24, 2014

I met a group of guys a few times out here that trad this wall, the right side of it. Think three pitches. They said they've been doing it for 20+ years. The quarry is still active, so walking through the active operation (Bradley Rd) poses some access issues, even though they don't directly own the wall anymore, they do own the property below I believe. The entire left side of the wall has many active Peregrine Falcon Nests as well, so I would be careful setting any lines up here. Already seen two areas where anchor bolts were chopped at the top. Food for thought... Mar 22, 2014

Awesome story Peter! Thanks for sharing. I notice you hail from good ol' Bridgeton! I went to Winona for 9 years and then went to Bates. Such a great area! Jan 14, 2014

The driving up possibility on Baldwin Drive has been shut down since the day the Uhaul got pushed off the cliff but it is an easy bike ride, 10 minutes on a paved road. Its actually a really nice bike ride on Baldwin drive if you do the whole road and come back on the road down below past Lake Wintergreen. Some sweet boulder along the way as well. Jan 10, 2014

I grew up here in the 1960s and 70s (I can see my house in the aerial photo on the main area page) and as an interesting aside, sometime around 1976 a U-Haul truck was driven/pushed off the top of the Barker Daniel Wall (we just called it the quarry wall back then). Baldwin Drive runs really close to the edge at the top and some kids, I'm guessing, stole the truck and broke down the chain-link fence and did the deed. (I swear I was not involved.) The wreckage was visible for a really long time (years as I recall, it didn't quite make it to the bottom and must have been a real pain to clean up.) Jan 7, 2014
