Sleepy Bear Tower

California > San Bernardino… > Big Bear Lake Area > Big Bear South > Mill Creek Rd/S… > Sleepy Bear & Nightma…

Description

This is the left (west) of the two formations as seen from the road and has a couple of short but fun routes on it's east face - Breakfast Burrito (5.10d) and Eyes Wide Shut (5.11b). The backside (west face) is somewhat dirty and lichen-covered but has some easy cracks as well as some face climbing.

Getting There

Approach from Hwy 18 near the Alpine Slide by turning onto either Mill Creek Road or Tulip Lane. Drive 3 miles from the intersection of Mill Creek Road and Tulip Lane along Mill Creek Road (2N10), where the towers will come into view on the right (north) side of the road, and park at a bend in the road.

Sleepy Bear Tower is fairly obvious from the parking area and road and will be the first formation encountered on the approach.

Head north from the parking area about 20 feet to access a mountain bike trail and make a right following the trail through some trees and then back left uphill until Sleepy Bear Tower comes into view. Once Sleepy Bear Tower comes into view leave the mountain bike trail and head uphill along a faint trail to reach the tower.

The approach takes about five minutes or less and can easily be done in flip-flops if you are careful with your footing.
