Zomba Plateau and environs.

International > Africa > Malawi

Description

Zomba Plateau is unique. A mountain rising to 6000ft (1800m), it has large tracts of cedar, pine and cypress. The plateau top is criss-crossed by streams and there are waterfalls and lakes. There are driveable tracks around the top from which the views are spectacular. Motorcycle is the best way to get around. The town of Zomba at the base is one of the nicest in Malawi, and there are several quality lodges and hotels. Dining options are better than most places too. The attraction here is both the setting and the climbing. Most everything described is done on a toprope. Bolted routes are non existent. Hardware gets stolen...and you can expect crowds watching you almost anywhere.

Getting There

Getting there is fairly simple with either public transport or by car. The road up the plateau is the same road with a sign indicating Kuchawe Inn, the road is narrow, filled with curves, steep and with occasional bridge crossings. Travelling up or down the Plateau whether by foot or vehicle should be carried out very carefully especially during the rainy season. Getting to Zomba can be done by bus from either LLW ot BLT. Fruit vendors line the roadside.
