Access Issue: Seasonal Raptor Closure at Newhalem Crags March 1st to mid-July Details

Peregrine falcons select nest sites on cliffs in the Upper Skagit Valley, including the Climbing Management Areas of Newhalem West (Ryan’s Wall) and Newhalem East. As required in the NPS Superintendent’s Compendium, these areas will be closed to all public from March 1st to July 15th of each year, or until the young falcons have fledged or NPS staff have determined that nesting will not occur on a specific wall during this period. Access Fund, Washington Climbers Coalition and NPS partner on a volunteer raptor monitoring program to determine nesting activity. Contact the NPS and/or WCC for updates.

Getting There

To get to 7 mile... from the start of NF rd.17 go approximately 7 miles. You can approach from below or drive to the top and walk down. To approach from below park at the pullout under the crag. Cross the road and follow the trail through the clear cut to the base of the crag. Follow the pink flags. You'll be standing under Sundeck Direct and the Poopdeck when you arrive at the crag.

Or... go another minute up the road and take the sharp lefthand spur to the top of the formation (high clearance or an adventurous attitude is advised). A Toyota Corolla has been spotted at the end of the road.... There are only a couple few spots for cars up here so please leave room for others turn around and get back out. Look for a trail down and left. The top is a fun spot to camp. The fee is picking up after yourself as well as few shotgun shells.
