If you're taking a taxi (500-1000 KZT) or driving from the city, here are your directions. From the cross streets of Dostyk Ave. and Al-Farabi Ave., in Almaty, drive south on Dostyk Ave., toward Shymbulak Ski Resort (Dostyk Ave. eventually turns into Gornaya St but you probably won't notice). There are two turnoffs you can take. The first is 4.3 miles (6.9 km) from Dostyk and Al-Farabi (after you pass the turn around point for the #29 bus, there is a large red retaining wall on the left, it's the next right turn). Turn right off Dostyk, drive upriver for a few hundred meters before crossing the river and turning left. You'll then drive between some houses, keep going on the dirt road until you see a turnoff on your left with 3 metal dumpsters (I think it's the 2nd turnoff on the left, you'll see the boulder from here) and park. This way is a little longer than the alternative and I've had to back out of the residential area (not an easy task) because someone blocked the road with their car and was nowhere to be found. The second option, it's 5.1 miles (8.2 km) from Dostyk and Al-Farabi. Turn right off Dostyk (immediately after a large billboard of a mountain scene) go down the hill and across the river, then turn right. After a few hundred meters, you'll enter a small lumber yard, if the gate is closed, someone will come shortly to open it (recently they have been asking for 200 KZT to pass through the gate so I've been taking the first option instead). Exit the lumber yard on the opposite side and the first turnoff on the right will be the 3 dumpsters.
The #6 bus is the only one that goes to this point (80-100 KZT) but it can be unreliable and comes every 1/2 hour to every 1.5 hours. If you take 6, look for the billboard with the mountain scene on the right and get off the bus immediately after. That will be the second entrance. Or, the #29 bus comes every 10 minutes but doesn't go all the way up. Take #29 until it turns around and hike up 0.5 miles (0.8 km) to the first turn off using the directions above.
