Description

This is a great cliff that is virtually unknown to most MA climbers. The rock quality is great. There are long 100 foot routes. Access is the issue. You have a bit of a hike unless someone knows a better way in.

Getting There

It is in Monson, MA. Take exit 8, the Palmer exit off Rte 90 to Rte 32 south. I've heard that there is access off Bunyan Road, but don't take this as fact. Ask permission to cross anyone's land. You may be able to go in the back way to the top of the cliff by going in the hospital grounds and parking where there is a gated dirt road and walk in that way.

Per Brian: it has been reported that the access from Bunyan Road is not an option. The landowner has been leaving notes on the windshields of people parking there. It has also been reported to me that local climbers regularly park here at a small three car pullout at the trailhead. So park at your own risk.

Climbers are now accessing Bunyan from the west side through Macomber Road. It practically goes through somebody's backyard, so ask nicely before you go there. Macomber Road is off Upper Palmer Road. Park and find an indistinct trail to the top of the cliff.

The rock quality is excellent and the cliff has a small variety of decent routes. This is a great crag if you're within 30 minutes' drive, but if you're >60 minutes, it is not really worth it, IMO.

Like is mentioned, park on Macomber Rd off of Upper Palmer Rd. Ask the cow people if you can walk across their farm, then follow the electrical service road to the first set of power lines (steel frames), turn right, and follow them to a smaller service road on left, after about ΒΌ mile, which goes up to the cliff top.

I'm not sure about the "Hospital" way in, because I drove around that area and it's:
- gated off completely,
- No Tresspassing signs are posted literally every 20 ft,
- a paid patrol guard sitting in his squad car on the lookout for vagabonds and such,

so if anyone has insight about that way, it'd be helpful.

I've only visited once, but the trickiest part is that you have to top out, since there's no easy (or at least safe) way to hike up the cliff from the base. If anyone knows a way up, please chime in. I met a local climber there, and he said there's no safe way up. His friends hiked around the base (somehow) and left that way. Aug 17, 2017

I climbed there with permission of the landowner years ago. Did you ask? There is a pretty well-worn hiking trail across the top, so people obviously access the property. Your local crag? Jun 10, 2013

I'm not sure of the access issues at this time. I've only gone in with Ken Nichols who has a key to the gate off Macomber Road. I haven't been there lately. I heard that you can walk in via Bunyan Road, but you have to cross someone's land, so you have to ask permission. May 25, 2013

A local climber told me about this place several years ago, but I have never made it out there. Is access prohibited, or just difficult/long? Would love to check it out soon. May 24, 2013
