The Joshua Tree National Park Superintendent's Compendium states that: 1. Vegetation is not allowed to be used as an anchor. 2. Only neutral or rock colored bolt hangers are allowed.
Though large in size the southwest face of Big Hunk is fairly broken with almost all of the routes on the right side on the Midnight Dreamer and Cryogenics Walls. The "Forgotten Valley", a flat-bottomed and very vegetated open area, is located here bordered on the west by Little Hunk - NE Face (Shady Grove Wall).
Getting There
The best approach is by circling around the southern end of Little Hunk from SW Face Right (Monkey Business Wall) and scrambling up along boulders past Little Hunk - NE Face (Left) and then through a notch to the base. The approach takes about 15-20 minutes from the car.
