Description

Read Mountain is a heavily used recreation area on the weekends. It is in the MIDDLE of the Roanoke Valley and people swarm there on Saturdays and Sundays. During the week it is not heavily populated but the chances of you seeing at least one person are strong. As of now climbing is not listed on the sign of things not allowed on Read Mountain. Let's work HARD to keep it this way. There is no camping, fires, mountain biking, etc. etc. So while we have access, let's make a good impression and clean up after ourselves and others, be respectful, and most importantly... safe.

Getting There

The access is through the Read Mountain Preserve on the south east side of the mountain. You can find directions to the parking lot by searching it. The best boulders are at the top of the mountain. Follow the 2 mile trail up to the top and you will be brought out on top of the rocks. Keep walking and you keep finding rocks. There is a connecting trail that makes the hike a little shorter but it's steeper and less used so it's a little harder to manage with a pad. Pick up a map at the trailhead and it'll show you all the trails. There are a couple other boulders lower on the mountain that we are still working on cleaning but will have a couple problems each. I've noticed also that the rain is washing chalk off pretty easily so identifying routes is challenging. Right now though there is still so much development to be done it would be hard to describe where the problems are that we have been working on. Get out there and get creative.
