Description Suggest change

This obscure, south-facing rock is located off the Redington Road area between the Catalina and Rincon Mountains NE of Tucson. It actually sits on the eastern slopes of the Catalinas approximately 2 miles north of the Bellota Ranch. The dirt road drive takes about an hour, as does the approach hike. It’s a perfect, remote Winter area for someone looking for decent, moderate climbing with a different view. Depending on the year, you could be comfortable late Fall to early Spring.

Getting There Suggest change

Take Tanque Verde road east until it turns into Redington Road at Melpomene. As the road enters the foothills it crosses a major wash (it used to turn to dirt here—now there’s a short section of paved road before it changes to washboarded dirt with potholes.) 7.2 miles from this wash is a sign for Bellota Ranch. Turn left here and continue 3.6 miles until you’re almost at the Ranch house and take a right which turns back north. 1.1 miles further you will arrive at the end of the easily passable road at a large camp area next to a wash. You can catch occasional glimpses of the rock all along the road after you turn off Redington Road. High clearance is helpful.

Start hiking up the blocked road which turns into a wash. After about 30 minutes and a few easy waterfall sections the drainage takes a sharp right turn at a left side drainage as the rock comes back into view. Almost immediately, another left side drainage is followed briefly until you can diagonal up and right to the base of the rock.
