Description

Ski mountaineering destination east of the popular Alta Peak has a superb view from its summit.

The NW Ridge is a fun Class 2 scramble from the sublime Pear Lake.

Getting There

From the Wolverton Trailhead take the Lakes Trail to Pear Lake, then follow the cross country use trail, marked by occasional ducks, to Moose Lake, leave this at the rocky gap on the crest of the eastern wall enclosing Pear Lake.

Go here for permits if planning an overnighter.

If planning an overnighter I highly recommend camping at Pear Lake, which is very beautiful but also very popular, so popular that it has assigned camp sites.

Well I see that this area is to cover anything accessed from the west - this peak is accessed from the west.

However I don't agree with this as a driver, because many peaks can be accessed from both sides. The original intent of "High Sierra" was to include any peak in the range whether it was accessible from any compass point. Needless to say the system continues to move towards more and more complication and therefore a more complex hierarchy.

It appears I'm in the minority in trying to keep things simple, what could be simpler than clicking High Sierra, then a peak and then a route?

So, if you move this peak you're going to have to start moving all of the peaks in the park(s) which have a possible west side approach, Charlotte Dome for example.

It seems like we're moving to include the parks, Inyo, Ansel, etc. etc. Let's hope the people using MP know which park/area their peak is located within the range of the High Sierra.

It'll take lots of work - and I'm hoping that I'll continue to be an administrator and not orphaned out. May 27, 2015

I moved this one into the newer Sequoia National Park area from the High Sierra, since it fits better here now IMHO. If you disagree no prob, just let me know and I'll put it back. May 22, 2015
