QianGuang Temple Crag

International > Asia > Taiwan > Kaohsiung

Description

A short crag of limestone nestled amongst the trees and buildings of western Kaohsiung. It sits below the more famous attractions of "Monkey Mountain" - like the zoo and the hiking trails - and just above the harbor and Sun Yat-sen University. It's a 5-10 minute walk north from Sizihwan station.

You are bound to see a few people out here on weekends, though you could have the place to yourself on a weekday. There are currently more hard (7a+) routes going in, and potential for others elsewhere with a little adventure and a saw. Some of the routes are still cleaning up, but are getting better with each ascent.

Pretty much all the routes fall between 10a-11d. A lot of them are short, bouldery routes with slight overhangs, pockets, and often sharp edges. However, some routes feature more varied limestone features like tufas, underclings, and melty ice cream cone pillars.

All information about route names, first ascentionists, route setters, etc. is known by local climbers who mostly speak Chinese. Supposedly there is a guide book on its way. Ask Steven - he's a real pal.

Getting There

[Hide Comment] We were here back in February and the fleas in some areas were unbearable. If you kick around in the grass at all, they will be literally swarming up your legs. The main area seems to be mostly unaffected, but the Bridge and Project areas were infested. Hopefully this is just a seasonal thing... Jun 4, 2013
[Hide Comment] Visited recently, and there were fleas at the Bridge area, but nowhere else. They weren't too bad either. Jan 9, 2014

[Hide Comment] It's worth noting that are four 5.6 or less climbs on the north wall( north wall 1?) and right below the north wall next to platform. Quite convenient if you have new people in your group that want to build
confidence on some easier routes. Jan 31, 2017
[Hide Comment] I was here in October 1, 2019, I didn’t see any fleas. I bet the mosquitoes can be bad but luckily that day we had a strong breeze. The area is beautifully shaded all day and super comfortable with a concrete floor. Super easy to find, the routes are maybe 8 meters tall, has some extremely easy ones good for beginners. Also has 2 anchors about 10 feet off the ground good for learning how to clean a route or how to climb multi pitch. And it has monkeys!

Not a place you “must see”, don’t come to Kaohsiong just to climb here, maybe the other climbing location in town is better. But a great place for families to hang out for a day! Sep 28, 2019
