Description Suggest change

This area has newer routes on a feldspar quartz dome close to Forest Road 100 (Buffalo Park Road). These are mostly sport routes with a few trad, sport, and mixed lines waiting for first ascents. All routes crimp, pinch, or stem their way up quartz nubbins, with the occasional dark inclusion or light colored intrusion. As with all new routes on this type of rock, watch for the random nubbin popping off. Be aware that this dome, as well as the main Rose Dome, sit in a burned-out forest... trees sometimes topple during periods of high winds. There are trails developing on either side of the dome. East side trail will take you all the way down to "Piggly Wiggly". West side trail wanders around the dome and dwindles down after "Climbing Trees". Persevere and log hop to get to the rightmost three routes.

East Side Routes (L to R) - you will see this side of the dome as you approach. It gets morning sun.

1. Piggly Wiggly, 5.8+, sport.
2. Whisper to the Baby Moose, 5.8+, trad.

8. Squirrel, 5.9, sport.

Getting There Suggest change

Drive out of Steamboat to the top of Rabbit Ears Pass. As you are nearing the east summit, look for Forest Road 100 (or Buffalo Park Road) on the right. Continue on this well maintained gravel road for 8.7 miles. You will Come around a right hand bend and both Rose Domes will be directly in front of you. The one on the right, north, is the "Other Rose Dome". Park on the left in a pullout/primitive hunters' campsite. Approach by crossing the road and picking up a trail immediately past a yellow left hand turn sign. This "trail" is marked with blue survey tape and lined (somewhat) with logs the entire way. Within the first few minutes, you will walk across a large log laying over a moist grassy area. From there, follow a flat, shallow ridge all the way to the dome. As you approach the dome, you will have been looking at the East side routes. The trail will take you to the very north end. Stay right, and walk around to the West side, or stay left, and climb the East side. It is approximately 15 minutes.
