Access Issue: Private Property in the area Details
To access the Mason lake and the surrounding boulders you must first drive in on the Cataract Lake road which is public access through private land. Please don't climb any rock until reaching the BLM public lands sign. The sign is located at a cattle guard and an enormous boulder beside the road. All rock beyond this point is on public lands and is fair game.
This area has some potential for bouldering close to Bozeman. Most of the climbing potential is in the boulder fields along the North side of the Cataract Lake/Mason Lake road on both BLM and National Forest land. Mason Lake proper can be accessed by a 1.3 mile trail and offers beautiful views of Hollow Top peak.
Getting There [Edit]
Drive through the town of Pony and make the next right going up a steep dirt road. Staying straight instead will take you to the North Willow Trailhead where there is a pit toilet and access trails to Hollow Top Lake and Peak. Shortly after turning right you will pass the "Public Access through Private Land" sign. Please respect the private property and stay on this road until passing the "BLM Public Lands" sign after about a mile. Boulder fields can be found along the North side of road. After another half mile or so you will come to Y, left takes you to the Mason Lake trail. The trail is 1.3 miles to the lake and is open to ATV's.
