Description

Micronesia is a subregion of Oceania, comprising thousands of small islands in the western Pacific Ocean. Most of these islands are low lying coral atolls, however a select few are volcanic high islands with some elevation and exposed basalt. It is distinct from Melanesia to the south, and Polynesia to the east. The Philippines lie to the west, and Indonesia to the southwest.

The name Micronesia derives from the Greek mikros (μικρός), meaning small, and nesos (νῆσος), meaning island. The following countries are included in this geographic region: Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), Palau, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Nauru, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

This region has a tropical climate with generally high humidity and year round highs in the 80's and lows in the 70's. Local culture varies between islands, but most nations remain traditional in their land rights/laws, which could present accessibility issues. Also, most (and in many cases, all) opportunities for climbing are undeveloped and/or unknown. The best opportunities for climbing in this region lie in the high islands of FSM and the Northern Marianas and possibly Guam and Palau.

Feel free to add beta to this area (Micronesia) for the following locations:

Guam - I've heard there's a rock gym, beach bouldering on coral and limestone and a sport crag with five lines (5.10-5.11) at the Talofofo cliffs, as well as some off-limits spots near military bases and Lover's Point. I've also seen pictures of people cliff jumping off what could be deep water solos and others of people rappelling waterfalls there.

Northern Marianas (Saipan) - There appear to be numerous peaks and cliffs here based on this site: mountainzone.com/mountains/…. Also, there could be deep water soloing at Saipan Grotto area.

Palau - There appear to be beach bouldering options on the limestone islands and coral sharpness, as well some possible deep water soloing on the limestone arch and other such formations.

Federated State of Micronesia - This area is already established on Mountain Project. Add beta to the existing FSM area page.

I can't imagine much climbing elsewhere in Micronesia but if you know of some, feel obliged to add. Thanks! Oct 10, 2012
