Description Suggest change

The Panhandle is a broad slab, averaging 35 ft. in height, similar to Superstar Slab at Mt. Rubidoux. The northern end is low angle, but the slab steepens to beyond vertical toward the southern end. The slab faces west, so it has sun exposure most of the day, except the early AM. This slab is situated below The Diner and just downhill is a group of boulders Spider Savage refers to as the "Nude Beach."

Getting There Suggest change

The Panhandle lies to the west of the Elephant Head and the First Corridor, and just downhill from The Diner. The quickest approach takes the path to the north (right) once down the hill and near the largest cave on the east face of the Elephant's Head. Hike west along the base of wall, past the north entrance to the First Corridor. Continue down hill and look for a narrow passage between formations on the right. Walk down the broad gully and through the boulders to the southern end of The Panhandle. A path leads north along the base of the wall.  The approach takes approximately 15 minutes from the parking area. Alternately, follow the path to the eastern shoulder of The Diner and rappel to the base of the Rio Grande Wall from rings on a large water polished depression. Then, walk west along the base of the slab to the Panhandle. Two rappels are required wilth a 60m rope (one 70m won't do).
