Lake Amatitlan

International > N America > Guatemala

Description

Lake Amatitlan is the closest sport climbing to Guatemala City, offering numerous routes overlooking a volcanic lake. It is one of the most gorgeous places I have ever climbed, offering some of the most incredible views you will experience in your life. The view of the lake from the crag is spectacular, not to mention you also get a breathtaking view of two major volcanoes: Pacaya and Agua. With an outdoor environment that is not common to most climbers, you’re in for a treat. For example, climbing in the jungle can be exhilarating and frightening, as lizards might claim your hold.

The crag has been separated into 6 sectors and a guide has been compiled by 2 of the best local climbers. You can check it out by going to the pictures. Most climbs are fairly short, with 12 quickdraws being more than enough. The rock is mostly vertical (or slightly less than) and not likely to break.
It mostly features two styles of holds: crimps and small crimps. Theres also a few crack climbs to break the cycle and a couple of overhangs. Ranging from 5.6 to 5.12c, it has something for everyone. There is a project yet to be climbed that will probably be the first 13 of the place.

The crag has around 70 routes now, with a small group of climbers dedicated to cleaning, maintaining and improving the area. The local climbing crew is around 20 people. It’s small, but super encouraging and welcoming to new and visiting climbers. Come join us, and if you have any questions don’t hesitate to shoot me an email at galindo.alejandro.j@gmail.com.

Getting There

The climbing is in the town of Amatitlan, overlooking Lake Amatitlan near Guatemala City. Directions to this town can be easily obtained and is just off of CA-9 about 30 KM south of Guatemala City (Make sure your schedule allows for plenty of traffic). Once at the touristy section of the lake, head left (north) on a road that goes around the lake. Not too far, maybe a quarter mile, with houses on your right there will be a small parking area (3-4 spaces) on your left. The parking area should have a large boulder. On the right of this parking area is an obvious trail that heads up the mountain. A steep trail but takes no more than 15 minutes for fatties. Keep an eye out for vicious animals such as the nest of wasps in a log half way up. The trail will take you right into the lower crag where you'll find routes on the trail to the left. If you take the trail right, you'll hike for another five minutes to the upper crag. The trail is easy to follow and requires some scrambling. You'll pass a rock with two U bolts to help you over a short section.2016 Update from Alejandro Galindo:Around 3 years ago, a new entrance to the crag was built. It is a 50 meter walk past the old entrance. You go through a store owned by Julio and Claudia who have graciously allowed the climbers to pass through their land. Julio has improved the access by building an easier, well marked trail with stairs for the steeper parts. Because of this, the access is 5Q (less than a dollar) and parking is 5Q (less than a dollar). It takes around 15 minutes to get to the first sector.2017 Update from Alejandro GalindoJulio's store has been shut down and he has been forced to move out as of September 23, 2017. This does not change anything as far as climbing is concerned, since Julio's dad is still allowing us to park at the store and go through his land. However, please be VERY respectful when passing through and remember to pay for the entrance because he can shut his doors any time he wants. Please contact Alejandro for any questions or concerns you have to have the most up to date information or if you just want to climb but are still unsure of certain things. Phone number/Whatsapp is +(502) 4811-9310. You can also send an email to galindo.alejandro.j@gmail.com. You can also check out and message the Instagram page Chapin Rock Climbing if you need help.

[Hide Comment] June 13 2021: Vehicle broken into at Julio's Parking

Heads up to anyone climbing in Amatitlán, our truck was broken into today parked outside Julio's shop.

It was a clean job, no broken windows, they popped the seal and jimmied it open. Left it locked again so we didn't notice it right away. All they took was money but our truck door now needs repairs and we are reluctant to leave it parked there again while we climb. Jun 13, 2021
