Description

This area has granite, freestanding boulders that are 15- 20 feet tall and well-featured with slopers, crimps and jugs. The boulders in this area contains many problems from V0 and up. This area is still undeveloped, for the most part, and has quite a bit of potential.

Getting There

Park at scenic overlook two car parking and designated parking only. Continue down the road untill you reach a right hand pullout blocked by a gate reading; NO PARKING. Cross the road and continue under the the power line towards the magnificent "dome" until you reach a clear area holding three or four free standing boulders. This area is referred to as the chipped boulders area in a local guidebook because of the repulsive chipping of artificial holds and ignorant placement of numerous bolts. If you see this disgusting defacement, then you're in the right place.

[Hide Comment] I was using the guidebook to get to the Burn/Natural Apparatus area. No parking where there should be, looks like they added no parking signs to what was once small parking areas. So we parked by the overlook area and was about to start walking down when a ranger for the reservoir stopped by and asked if I needed anything. I told him where I was headed, and he said the whole open space area that the boulders are in was closed for restoration. I did look this up before heading there and didn't see any info on the Boulder Open Space website. So we just headed back down to Flagstaff. Does anyone have any info on bouldering here? Is all/most of the areas closed? I was just a little bummed, because it seemed like a fun, little area. Jun 18, 2017

[Hide Comment] That seems odd. I've been bouldering there pretty regularly for the last couple of years and I've never had an issue. I've been stopped by Denver Water folks a few times and they just ask where I'm bouldering and tell me to have fun. Jun 24, 2017

[Hide Comment] There are no changes to recreation at Gross Reservoir in 2019 as a result of the expansion of the reservoir. More information can be found at grossrec.org. May 9, 2019

[Hide Comment] I recently spoke with a ranger out here, and he said to refrain from posting routes from Gross on Mountain Project. Admins - I'm not sure what the implications are, but you may want to remove some of the climbs that I and others have posted. Oct 1, 2019
