The Stony Bald Boulders are on the south face of Stony Bald, NC at over 4000' and up the hill from the Shut-in Ridge trail. The area is not climbed often, so the bouldering trail is rough and secluded. There are many more boulders than are on the trail. There is a range of boulder sizes and difficulty, overhangs, large wall, tall and short. The rock is sometimes loose and uncleaned by lack of frequent use. The area is full of wildlife so exercise caution and respect.

Getting There

Stony Bald boulders are off of the Shut-in Ridge trail a few minutes walk north from the Elk Pasture Gap parking area on the corner of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Hwy 151. Park and cross the Blue Ridge Parkway to pickup the Shut-in Ridge trail (Mountains to Sea) heading north to Asheville. A couple minutes on the trail, there will be a set of unclimbed boulders, continue on main trail a few more minutes (observe teh many boulders up hill from the trail) until you reach a couple large rocks directly next to the trail. There will be a rough trail heading up the hill to some obvious first boulders. The bouldering trail goes to these boulders then traverses to the left back across the mountain. The second boulder to the left is a large overhang. Up and to the right is another set of boulders or continue left around the overhang to the third then upthe hill to the rest. There are a lot of boulders on the mountain, so enjoy looking. Always keep an eye out for snakes, bears and other wildlife.

Thanks for the new addition to the bouldering in Pisgah...cant wait to check these boulders out soon! Jun 22, 2012
I visited these boulders yesterday. The trail is rough but I found a solid V2 route. Need someone with an eye for harder routes, but this area definitely has some potential. Give me a PM if you need a buddy to come along. Jun 27, 2012

Just finished checking these boulders out this morning...sent around 10 routes from Vb-V4 on the first few boulders, don't know if they're FA's or not. Overgrown right now but totally agree that these boulders have some good potential. Planning on putting some routes up here on MP in the next few days. Jun 28, 2012
Went there yesterday, perfect rock and conditions. You must access from hwy 151 for now. I didnt do any climbing but discovered several boulders not on MP, much easier to access this time of year. Go check it out! Feb 10, 2014
