Description

West Sawtooth Canyon is located on the Southwest side of the House Range west of Delta. Dominating the upper limits of the canyon is the massive Notch Peak cirque with it's banded layers of limestone and dolomite. At the lower flanks of the canyon is a large amount of granite of similar quality to LCC of the Wasatch Front. There's everything from single pitch bolted climbs to multi-pitch climbs that top out the canyon's domes. For more info refer to James Garrett's excellent guidebook to Utah's West Desert.

Getting There

Follow Hwy 50/6 west out of Delta, after passing the south flank of the range and the turn-off for Ibex, take a right on the Notch Peak Loop rd. Follow this graded dirt road until the canyon comes into view and a right turn at a gravel pit leads toward it. The road gets rather rough towards the end but with careful driving a passenger car can make it pretty close.

Bit of approach beta coming from the east: drive past the standard Ibex turnoff (on your left, let's call that mile 0) and past the Tulle Valley Rd which intersects the highway (mile 2.5). At mile 6 leave the pavement and make a right on a perpendicular dirt road which meets back with the Tulle Valley Rd at miles 7 (this saves a bit of dirt driving). Head left (NW) on the dirt road as is slowly wraps around the range and more and more granite shows up on the lower flanks of Notch Peak, passing a water cistern and a number of faint dirt roads heading toward the peak. At mile 12.5 make a right on a well-traveled road heading NE (labelled King's road on some maps I believe), passing an old gravel pit.
The road drops into the wash and gets shitty at miles 15 but we saw a brand new Subi Crosstrek make it all the way into the canyon so the drive it pretty manageable. Nov 21, 2017

The rock out there is pretty good! Definitely some commitment and adventure required. But likely, you'll carry a big rack and not use a lot of it. But the solitude is sweet. Sawtooth Canyon is pretty accessible... I have always wanted to go see more in the Painter Spring Canyon a little further north. From the Rush Valley road those domes look really impressive!!

NOLS teaches multi week climbing classes on the granite out there. I think JG also put some routes on the granite. Fun place to go up and see what you find. We found many routes had A0 sections through the hardest parts so they were pretty manageable to go up. Nov 1, 2015
there is so much more to this place than what is listed here, but ill leave it to the guys doing the work to decide if they want them here. adventure climbing, room for a ton of new routes out here. Oct 30, 2015
