Description

Barrinha is one of the best, and more accessible sport climbing crags in Rio. It is slightly overhanging granite with routes generally in the range of 20- 35 meters. Barrinha is home to some of the harder test pieces in Rio, and although it doesnt have too much climbing at the 5.11 and under range, there are a few routes of the grade.

Bring about 14 draws and runners, and possibly some trad gear if you are planning to do some of the mixed routes.

Getting There

The crag sits at the base of Pedra da Gavea (where the hang gliders launch towards Ipanema) and is accessible by bus, although not as easily as the Urca. The guidebook Floresta da Tijuca by Flavio Daflon and Delson de Queiroz is excellent and has both maps and route beta. If you are taking a bus from the Center, you will have to get off at the first stop outside of the tunnel that goes underneath Pedra da Gavea (on the western side of the tunnel). From there it is about a 15 minute walk to the entrance of the Tijuca National Park, and another 30 minutes uphill from there to the crag.
