Description

Collins Peak is in the very NE corner of the Forest Service land that is publlicaly accessible only thru the LPWHMA. Collins Peak has a bench marker location placed on it named "Notch" by the USGS. Apparently the lack of some map reader's subtle comprehension has led enough of them to call what is Collin's Peak "Notch Peak" after apparently after seeing "Notch" written on the 7.5 Topo next to Collins Peak. There exists a notch there that is formed with a lesser summit.

And billionaire Pat Broe whose ranch is just north of Reese Mtn has called his ranch here (one of 7 retreats) "the Notch Peak Ranch". Now Mr. Broe has tried twice to acquire the federal lands of Collins Peak and Reese Mtn via some sleight of hand tricks and payments with the US government. In both instances public outcry with the help of WY Game & Fish kept these lands in public domain. In one instance Broe brashly asserted there was no public access to these lands.

In some instances the travel across private lands of the north part of Palmer Rd onto lands directly adjacent to Collins Peak have as little as a 1/4 mile span. Access from Broe may not be granted, but there are a few other landholders of this necessary domain that are further east than Broe's land extends.

The easiest way up Collins Peak is easy 5th class and the rock quality is nothing to brag about, mostly metamorphic. Bighorn sheep hang out here with seemingly little to eat or drink.

Getting There

From the Ashley Confluence with Duck Creek head NE. Only some of the west and south boundaries of Sec 33 permit public access to the Forest Service land that lead to Collins Peak. The Google satellite poto of this peak is quite blaze and gray as almost nothing grows on this peak. It does cast a big shadow to the east when the google photo is taken from the west.
