DescriptionDouglas Park is the west face of the Book Pages Mound of the Southwest Ridge. It houses the Trifecta group within the 17 steep routes here. For perfecting the Trifecta you must successfully climb these three routes with only 3 total climbing attempts at the group per day: (1) the Hanging of Yellowstone Kelly 11b, (2) Sonic Hedgehog 12b and (3) Aeolius 12b one after another (in time-essentially no rests) but any order is acceptable. The 100 feet climbs are next to each other. Much like betting on the Trifecta at the dog track when you fail on one of these three, you lose the Trifecta bet for the day.
Mike Fredritchs came up with the Trifecta challenge. But Steve Babits hearing of the challenge before Mike got there to attempt it, thought he could onsight the three routes. To his dismay his belayer McGee would offer no beta when queried and Babits eventually pumped off. Freddie got title to the first Trifecta winner while Babits got the sticking nickname "Betalicker" from Larid.
In the movie below Betalicker, Steve Babits, redpoints Alien Fabric 12c for the second ascent. Alien Fabric overhangs 112 degrees for 45 feet while Devil Tower leans in for some hands free stances at 78 degrees. 20 Red Lights a climb in the Amphitheater of HightowerSW of Reese averages 104 degrees for 100 feet. The steepest climb on the SW Ridge is Eat alotta Peaches on the Curl wall. A long ago spout-off from Mike Fredritchs was, "The Tower Ain't Steep."
