Description

Mt. Avalon is great alternative to Mt. Willard on busy days. The hike to the multiple sections of ice flows is moderate and well worth it. The guide describes 5 routes but many more can be done. The views of Mt. Webster and Mt. Washington are excellent. On clear days you can expect sun for most of the day.

Getting There

Park at one of the many parking areas near the highland center on route 302 in Crawford Notch. Follow the Mt. Willard Trail located behind the yellow railroad station. Follow the moderate Willard Trail for roughly 1 mile to a point where the trail takes a 90 degree turn left. The ice flows on Avalon are just visible to the right. Bushwhack from the corner down into the valley and up the other side to the base of the ice flows. A riverbed will bring you up a gully to the base of the main area. Hopefully someone has already packed the trail for you!. Snowshoes are recommended if the trail is not in.

The bushwhack will take 20min-1hr depending on the trail.

Great to see this area getting some use. It is a great alternative to Mt Willard on the busy days! It also makes for a fun link up, (up willard and down to avalon). Mar 8, 2016

Folks seem to have trouble finding this place so here are the UTM coordinates I took at the base of The Battle of the Bulge.

Don't make our mistake. On our map there are two 90 degree turns on the trail. You want to start bushwhacking at the second one (one mile in), not the first one (1/4 mile in). We completely missed the ice and endured a heinous bushwhack almost to the summit. Jan 13, 2014
