Description

Down Hill from Turtle Dome can be found a huge boulder which is the main gem in the area. With a few solid problems scattered threw out as well.

Getting There

From Keystone, drive towards Mt. Rushmore on highway 16a. Take a left on 16a when the road junctions with 244. Measure from here, and drive 3.1 miles and park. This spot is where a non-major paved road intersects with the main highway on its right. This intersection is about 1/4 mile after driving through the second tunnel. There is no official parking, so just squeeze on the shoulder.

Are these the "Way too High Boulders"? If so there are bolts on top of some of them for Pumpfests of the past. About a 15 minute walk down there. Feb 15, 2012

The best approach I have found to reach the actual "Way too High Boulders" is to walk south from where you park following a faint trail down the valley that curves to the south west around the south side of "Turtle Dome". Eventually you end up headed about straight west in a flat area southwest of "Turtle Dome". Just before a ridge of rocks wander north into the woods and there are five large boulders (up to 30' tall) hidden in the trees. Several of these boulders have bolts for top roping. Feb 18, 2012
