Crew Crag

Montana > Southwest Region > Madison River Area > Bear Trap Rd Routes

Description

Along the Bear Trap road this crag has a short approach and some really fun routes! It can be rather windy so bring your wind gear. It has been done in mid-January with the right weather. A very pretty setting right along Madison River makes this just a nice place to be.

Getting There

From Bozeman head west on Highway 84 (towards 4 Corners) until you reach the turn off for Bear Trap (20.6 miles from intersection of 84 and 191). Take a left just before the bridge to get onto the access road for Bear Trap. Head 1.2 miles down this dirt road until you reach a small pull through turnout on the left side of the road. The climbs are up above this. At this time there is a white rope hanging that allows you to ascend the 20ish foot cliff up to the start of the climb.

[Hide Comment] In 1998 or thereabouts Chris Kurowski and I topped out on the right-facing book just left of "Balance of Power". It went at 5.8 or 5.9, was fairly dirty, but is a worthy adventure route if you're looking for something new to do on the Madison.

The short tower-esque formation downhill and to the right (south) of this buttress also hosts a fun little gear climb in the 5.7 range that finishes on a splitter crack, by Montana standardsÂ…

I'm psyched to check out "Balance" sometime in the future. Thanks for the addition. Aug 28, 2014
