Description

Sea Cliffs in Busan, Korea's 2nd largest city (on the south eastern coast). Amnan Park is a popular city park for fishermen, but there are 3 crags there as well-- Turtle Rock, Shark Rock and Whale Rock.

Except the occasional picnickers and regular fisherman (in the semi-distance) the rocks are off the beaten trail, though a few groups there can make them seem crowded. However, urban cragging rarely gets this scenic.

The rock is sedimentary, but pretty solid.

Getting There

The park is on the tip of Song-do penninsula, south of the famous Jalgachi Sea Food market. There are busses from the market-- driving head SW along the coast and follow the signs (if you're cragging, paid parking beats getting towed). Follow the trail-- there is a turnoff for Turtle Rock (the easiest and most popular crag) just before the suspension bridge, but it requires hopping a fence and is officially closed off (sometimes officials there enforce this). You can cross the bridge, head left and follow a staircase down and around left (high tide there's a wade) to Turtle Rock, or way up and around left (low tide you can walk around the big rock) to Shark Rock. Whale Rock is the furthest crag from the park entrance. From the main trail, just past the green shed (right) and picnic tables (left), where the trail splits, follow the left fork up along the coast. It'll head back down, all the while following a soft green railing (and warnings not to fall!). Keep left, along the green when the trail splits. The railing ends but the trail continues down, past two military bunkers. It's rather steep, and at the end there are knotted fisherman's ropes to aid your decent. Once you're at sea-level, head right about 20 meters until you see bolts on cement-like rock. Note that maintenance here has been minimal and the 2nd pitches on Whale Rock are not recommended.
