Routes in Bruin Walk

Description

Bruin Walk is the long and popular walk way students use to get to and from class. It spans the campus east to west.

Getting There

The Old ckerman Union Building

Front/Main (north) Entry:
Right side, V1 Highball*
  • Must be downclimbed; HIGH profile so do only when
the crowds are minimal, super-bad landing.

North Entry to Reading Lounge:
Right side of Archway,V0, way fun
Arches traverse, feet = "Off", V2 (Brush
first!)

South Wall:
Tall features to window, V0*, way cool
  • Go inside, open the window & move the lamp first

Parking Lot Stair Tower:
5.0 (X), "The Rush", jug hauling for 60+ feet
up a vertical wall with holds you can
actually reach into and latch the
inside...just do not fall! Down climb

Physics Building, North Face:
"Physical Graffiti, 5.10 (X)
This is a 15 foot traverse from the second
floor open deck straight right to the
sky way. I soloed it in '83...once, and I
would never recommend it be done unroped
again because the man-made material has
probably undergone dangerous weathering.
It can be roped from the sky way, and a
fallen climber could then be lowered
safely to the deck...best to do on a
weekend.

North Campus:
English Building
Front Entrance, cement panels, V2
Steep high steps with long reaches to
dusty, slippery one inch edges
Theater/Film Center
Center Garden, Tower of Masks
"Face Climb", V0-?...depends on your
variation, right?

Athletic Administration Building (if it is still
there?)
"The Gorilla", 5.10-11 (R to X)
Layback the brick feature near the corner of the building, directly left of the metal letters that grace the wall at the front entrance. Must downclimb, so keep this in mind as you go up. The higher you go, the harder it gets...we never made it to the top...too high!! I think topping out on this would be 5.12- (X)

Old Geology Building in south Quad:
(If it's still there?)
West entrance,
triangular features to the side of the glass
Doors, 5.10+...must downclimb
Pimp the crimps up and down these skinny
vertical features. Adding the traverse
across the top pushes this to .11 (X)

The CO-OP Climbing Gym:
Located in the first parking level of Hardman Hansen Hall, which sits at the crest of Landfair, a block and a half from campus. I built this in the fall of 1983, and once it was discovered many local climbers came here to train power and endurance. I lived at the Co-Op from '83-'88, and I used that little gym all the time. And...it is still there, getting used, but -unfortunately- the parking structure now sports a locked gate...observant climbers will, however, find a way there; but, do realize that it is on private property, so keep the profile low.

Crack Machine (slick hands)
Peg Board (This builds wicked one-arm
lock-off power)
finger tip traverse (w/ undercling) on wood
