Description Suggest change

The Portnuef Range includes Upper Rock Creek Drainage (URCD) on the Southwest aspect of Snow Peak as well as Harkness Canyon at the southern end of the Range. URCD has a lot of potential for 2 and 3 pitch alpine routes from 5.5 to 5.8 with a granite/ryolite mixed feel. The area is just recently being visited so new routes will start showing up. Curently the URCD has one established Ice Route and one Alpine route. Harkness Canyon is a limestone sport climbing crag with an alpine feel. There are only a few routes developed in the area, but it has potential for hundreds of quality routes from 30ft to 250ft.

Getting There Suggest change

The closest town of substantial size is Pocatello ID. For access to URCD drive south from Pocatello on Interstate 15 to the small town of Inkom and follow the signs to Pebble Creek Ski area. When you find yourself on Green Canyon Rd heading up towards the ski area turn right on Bonneville road heading south and drive 2.5 miles on the dirt road. The drainage will be apparent, start contouring on foot from there. For Harkness Canyon access keep driving south past Inkom to the town of McAmmon. Take the main Exit (has a few truck stops that are visible)and drive east towards Lava Hotsprings. You will cross a bridge on the eastern edge of town, directly after the bridge take the first left and an immediate right onto Harkness canyon road. Travel this road up the drainage for several miles and the wall will be visible on the south side of the canyon. After the road turns from pavement to dirt start looking for a Boundary Trail sign on your right. When Located pull of the shoulder and walk the trail heading south. The boundary trail will eventually take you up to a saddle just below the southern part of the wall. From the saddle contour north and pick up the climbers trail to the crag.
