Description

This is hands down on the short list of my top 3 favorite boulders on the LRT. Steep, unique, and with a lazy day approach... Alcatraz has several tough boulder problems to choose from, and a couple classics that shouldn't be missed! Be sure to get on "Escape From Alcatraz" for some steep gnar that exits through a hole in the back of the "cave" and "Paladin" for a frustratingly awesome deadpoint up a steep face to a "credit card" thin slot. If your feeling particularly masochistic you can pull onto the "Great Escape" as well... but bring some fresh skin!

Getting There

Walk past the overlook and onto the trail. pass the Overlook Area which spans down past The Hive Boulder and the tiny Foggy Mountain Fin. After the Fin, your basically out of the Overlook Area.

After Overlook, you will walk around a very tight left turn in the trail (30 seconds past the fin) and now you are in the SLS Area.

After the sharp turn, the next feature you will see is MOW, which is a massive double-decker boulder which looks like a huge mouth (use youre imagination... its a large patio boulder with an even larger, steeply inclined roof boulder on top of the patio).

Directly past MOW is another steep boulder which is Alcatraz. The very top nose of Alcatraz is touching the back of MOW. The steep dark overhanging face is where the Escape problems are located.
